Our History

 The Pi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (key # 634) was chartered on May 1, 1988. The chartering ceremony was conducted in the All Faiths Chapel at Texas A&M University. Brother Arnold Williams read the charter during the ceremony. The charter members were Bro. Taft Benson, Bro. Keven Carreathers, Bro. Raymond Carreathers, Bro. Alvin Larke Jr., Bro. Larence Snowden, Brother Arnold Williams, and Bro. Rodrick Wright-Holmes.

     The Keynote speaker at the chartering ceremony was Bro. Joseph Byrd, then president of the Louisiana State Association of Alpha Chapters. The program featured the singing of a Greek Melody, wherein the official Hymns of other Black Greek Organizations were sung. Representatives from the following Black Greek Letter Organizations were present at the ceremony, Alpha Kappa Alphas Sorority Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

    The Alpha Line (first initiates) of Pi Alpha Lambda was inducted into the fraternity on December 18, 1988. Current Active Members reside in Brenham, Bryan, College Station and Houston.


 Pi Alpha Lambda celebrated  its first anniversary in May 1989 at the college station Ramada Inn by sponsoring a combined anniversary and scholarship banquet followed by a ball. The community participated in this event. Bro. Wash A Jones  was the keynote speaker. The proceeds from the banquet were used to send two Black teenage males to the Alpha Institute  at Langston University in Oklahoma.

Chapter Projects have included, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Voter Registration Drives

  • Saturday School- Tutoring of local elementary school students.

  • Toys for Tots- providing toys to children at Christmas time.

  • Breakfast with Santa- Providing an opportunity for local children to receive a toy and meet Santa. All attendants are provided refreshments.

  • Thanksgiving Baskets- providing dinners to needy families  for Thanksgiving

  • Go to High School Go to College- a program designed to give young people the incentive to complete high school and pursue higher education.

  • Black History Essay Contest- provide an opportunity for young people to enhance knowledge of Black culture and receive a monetary award for doing so.

  • Community Luncheon to serve as a sound board for the Black Community.
